Bio

Hello!

Welcome to this page of words, combined to create a snapshot of who I am. So really, welcome to me!

Formalities would suggest a bio that describes, in third person, my beginnings as a singwriter/songwriter, where I grew up – Calgary, Canada, in case you were wondering – and perhaps the list of influences. I could tell you that I had dreamed of doing this since I was a kid…just the kid didn’t know it at the time. It was not a path that I set out to follow but one that seemed to surface from under my feet. Flip to the page of me at six years old, beginning piano lessons, and you’d find I was always eager to practice, spending many hours plunking away at the keys. A few pages over, you’d see me in the front row at the high school band concert, with a…err…um…flute in hand. Hey – it was very portable and convenient! But after graduation, I chose to pursue other interests, certain that my time in front of the ivories had come to a close – though music always remained a first love and, really, who can forget their first love! So, I convinced my brother to teach me three chords on his classical guitar, just enough to open the door for me (and the guitar) to move to Vancouver, Canada, to attend university.

I soon discovered a passion for collecting and connecting words just so, much like those 1000 piece jig-saw puzzles (you know, the ones you bring out when the family gets together at Christmas). I’m so captivated by this process that allows me to create a picture of perceptions and thoughts on life, the experiences of those around me, and the discovery of who we are and our purpose, And since life needs a soundtrack, adding melodies to these words just makes sense.

Now flip the page to 2005 and you’d see me on a trip half way around the world sitting in the middle of an African rainforest, reflecting on the incredible people I had just met in Rwanda and Tanzania. It was time to do something – to make a difference – to use my passion for music – and out of that my debut cd, Every Line Every Colour, was born.

And now it’s taken a little while to find new words, new puzzles, new snapshots, that feel honest and important enough to share. But I’m there and have again, found myself in quite possibly my most favourite place in the world (with the exception of Africa, which has stolen a huge piece of my heart and won’t give it back), the studio! I can’t wait to see these new songs come to life and to share them with you! But, you will have to wait just a little longer…

much love,
shannon
